Outdoor Clothing Hire
A question we are often asked at Kayak For Hire is ‘what should I wear to go canoeing and kayaking’ and we believe that it’s best to dress in warm, loose and comfortable clothing. Remember, you can always take a layer off if it gets too warm. Manmade fibres, which can be found in a lot of sports/gym wear, are ideal. Generally they are designed to wick away perspiration and keep you warm. We have wind and waterproof layers available to hire (click here for our price list) which go over your own clothes to protect against the elements, but you can help by bringing a spare jumper just in case. We strongly suggest you avoid wearing cotton and jeans because whether you are wet from rain or perspiration these materials get heavy, uncomfortable and stick to you, which in turn makes you colder, and they are not as good at maintaining the right temperatures unlike sportswear.
If you are planning on getting wet on your canoe or kayak journey you may want to consider a wetsuit. Even on the sunniest summer days the water temperature in the Lake District can send you running. Wetsuits are designed to keep you warm when wet by trapping a layer of water between the suit and your skin. Your body heats up this layer of water which then helps to insulate you. The best wetsuits for paddling are long johns as they are sleeveless and don’t restrict your arm movement. We have a variety of wetsuits available to hire to suit differing temperatures and activities, click here to view our outdoor equipment hire prices.
